In 2022, the South Australian Government made an important commitment to criminalise coercive control – an insidious form of domestic abuse.
What is coercive control? How does it impact people? What are the signs? How does it start, and where can it lead? How can we appropriately address this behaviour through legislation and other measures?
Minister for Women and the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence, the Hon Katrine Hildyard, invites you to hear from remarkable advocates Sue and Lloyd Clarke, parents of Gold Coast woman Hannah Clarke who was brutally murdered along with her three children by her ex-partner in 2020. Hannah had been subjected to coercive and controlling behaviour prior to this horrific crime.
Despite unimaginable grief, the Clarke’s continue to demonstrate extraordinary courage and dedication to raising awareness about the dangers of coercive control and the need for legislation.
The ‘See the Signs’ Public Forum will be chaired by social commentator and award-winning writer, Jane Caro AM. It will also feature a panel of experts from the Domestic and Family Violence services sector in South Australia.
Please come along and learn how to ‘See the Signs’ of behaviours that seek to control another person, isolate them from their supports, and undermine their autonomy and dignity. Behaviours that can – and often do – lead to intimate partner homicide and have long-term impacts on the lives of victim-survivors.
