March has been a significant month for our sector as we continue to push for urgent reforms ahead of the Federal Budget and election.
The RED HEART Campaign led She Matters rallies across the nation to demand stronger government action to prevent violence against women. Our General Manager, Mary, spoke at the Adelaide rally on Saturday 15 March, joining a powerful lineup of speakers, including survivors who courageously shared their experiences. Their testimonies underscored the need for adequately funded service systems that can intervene early, prioritise victim-survivor safety, and address the diverse needs of women and children facing domestic abuse.
Embolden was hosted by sector member The Salvation Army’s Bramwell House this month. Bramwell House provides crisis accommodation and holistic support for women and children escaping domestic and family violence. During our visit, frontline staff shared their insights on how South Australia’s housing crisis is prolonging placement times and the urgent need for more pathways to safe, long-term affordable housing for those experiencing violence.
On 25 March, Mary presented to consultant child and adolescent psychiatrists on intimate partner violence and abuse among adolescents, emphasising the need for targeted interventions and improved services for young people facing violence.
The need for better support services for young people was powerfully reinforced at the SA premiere of Unanswered Calls, presented by Safe Steps at the Capri Theatre. The film sheds light on the critical gaps in services for young people experiencing violence and the urgent need for services to better meet their needs.
